One of the things I love about the beginning of a new month is participating in Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of 2014. For this month, his tags illustrate Smudge Stamping. It's a subtle change in the stamped image but it creates a softer look. These tags are first and second generation stamping of the same images. All Supplies are Tim Holtz unless otherwise noted.
To begin, I stamped the pear from Tim Holtz's Classics #1 Stamp Set (my favorite!) in Walnut Stain Distress Ink onto a manila tag. I stamped it again onto another tag and immediately smudged both images with a clean foam blending tool.
Next, I inked the butterflies from the Papillon Stamp Set in Wild Honey, Dusty Concord and Chipped Saphire Distress Inks and stamped them onto the tags. I smudged the image again.
I taped the Burlap Layering Stencil over the tag and used a Pumice Stone Distress Marker and the Spritzing Tool to create a design on all of the empty space on the tags.
I didn't have a lot of distress markers so I used the Ink pads and a Stampin' Up! BlenderPen to color in the pear. I stamped "Voyage" in Broken China Distress Ink and smudged it. The edges of the tags were inked using Walnut Stain and a Blending Tool.
I used the Spritz and Flick Technique to create water droplets on the tags. It's ridiculous how happy those little spots make me! I can hear Tim saying: "Look-a-that!" every time I do it! LOL
This is the first generation stamped tag.
This is the lighter version. (I know my coloring needs lots of help!)
The Idea-ology Word Bands were distressed by covering them with Weathered Wood Distress Paint and then wiping off the excess – leaving the paint in the grooves.
They were then attached to the tags using a Tiny Attacher. The "Figs" are from Botanical Remnant Rubs. Next, Cording was wrapped around the bottom of each tag and tied in a knot. Tissue Tape was attached and then sponged with Walnut Ink and a Blending Tool. A little piece of Filmstrip was stapled to the tag using the Tiny Attacher. Crinkle Ribbon was dyed using Weathered Wood Distress Stain and attached to the top of the tags.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial! Leave me a comment to let me know which version you like better. 🙂
WOWSERS!!! wonderful tags!! I ‘think’ I like the darker of the 2, but…..!your coloring (I think!!) is great & thank you for the tutorial!!
Hi Cathy,
I love your tags! My favorite is the darker one, but they are both beautiful. Now I need to know how to do the spritz and flick technique!! I have the SU spritzer so it’s great to see it resurrected. The water droplets look great!
Very nice!
Lovely tags, thanks for sharing
Cathy, your tags are gorgeous! I have come to like the whole “tag” concept as little pieces of art which can be used alone or added to a card or scrapbook page. Of the two samples, I like your first generation one the best. I think the deeper colors are more dramatic.
WOW! They’re fabulous!
Gorgeous tags Cathy
OMG I love these tags…awesome work on these Cathy.
I think they are both super, but I really like the second more weathered look.
Thanks or a fun tutorial.
Very nice! I think I like the bolder one best, but can see using either one. Thanks for your tutorial.
Thank you so much, Susan! I like the darker one too. 🙂
Thank you, Laura! I am happy about the return of the Spritzer too. I will do a video of spritz and flick soon. 🙂
Thanks, Dorothy!
Thank you, Barb in Kazoo! 🙂

I’m glad you liked the tutorial (and the tag!)
Thank you, LaFon! I’m glad you enjoyed the tags and tutorial.
😀
I think I like the lighter, second generation tag better. I really like the effect of the burlap stencil on the tag. Great job
Thanks, Louise!
I didn’t have the stencil that Tim used so I tried the Burlap. So glad you liked it.
Of course, I ordered all the things he used and will be posting another tag when my goodies arrive.
😀
Stunning, loved your take on this month’s challenge.
Thank you, Anguree! I had so much fun doing it!
I bought the stamp set Tim used and I’ll be submitting another version or two. 😉
