Flowers in Her Hair Paint Art Journal Pages

As I continue to explore all types of Mixed Media, I am increasingly pushed WAY outside my comfort zone! Drawing was not something I ever thought I could do and paint is not a medium I am particularly comfortable with. So..those are exactly the two things I am focused on. 😉

This is an Art Journal Spread for a Toni Burt Class that I am taking. It’s the first module in “Flowers in Her Hair.” They are way harder than they look. LOL. I’m going to keep practicing. 😉

I started by collaging the pages with Papers, Ephemera and Gel Matte Medium. Added paint and covered with another layer of Gel Matte Medium.

I drew the face and then added the paint flowers. She’s my Carmen Miranda. LOL!

For the quote, I used something a Life Coach, Yvette Rioux, had on her website. I loved it! “I DO enough…I HAVE enough…I AM enough.”

It’s definitely a start but I need a lot more practice. I’m enjoying the process though. 🙂

Inspiration Art Journal Page

I love participating in Challenges. You would think that you could be more creative without any boundaries but, for me, it’s just the opposite. Having a starting point always helps reign in my ADD mind. This one asks “What Inspires You?” That changes from day to day. Some days it’s things I see while others it’s things I feel. I am always inspired by the creativity of others and by the huge stash of products that I hoard! 😀

When I take classes, I learn invaluable tricks from the experts. One thing that I learned from several different artists is to never waste paint or ink. If anything is left over on your paintbrush, go to a blank page in your Art Journal and swipe it on there or even on a Tag. If there is ink or paint on a stencil, spritz it with water and squash it between two blank Art Journal Pages. If Ink remains on your Craft Sheet, mop it up with a tag. This is a treasure when you come back to it and your page is already started!! Also, whenever I go to my Craft Studio, I open my Art Journals and apply White Gesso to blank pages and leave them open to dry. This helps to save time when I want to create in them later. Just a couple of tidbits for you ‘cuz, hey, I never hold out on my peeps! 😉

So…If you saw my “Gratitude” Art Journal Spread, you know I won the last Ranger Challenge for Dina Wakley Media! Woo hoo! I just love to WIN! Doesn’t even matter what the prize is – haha – it’s just such a fun feeling! You can see the original “It is What it is” Art Journal spread HERE.

This page was started with the left over paints from those pages which is why you’ll see the same colors and stencils used. I have been practicing my faces every chance I get. I NEVER thought I would be able to draw a decent face.

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I always like to keep it REAL so I’m showing you my very embarrassing “First” face. You’re going to think it’s from Kindergarten but it is from my first Dina Wakley Class in 2015. She told us to draw a face in our Art Journal as a starting point for the day and then compare it to the faces we drew at the end of the day. I know! It’s hideous but this was honestly my best try. :-O

I’m showing you so that you’ll know if I can do it, you can do it too! It’s fun! The face below is a technique where you draw things where they would belong and your brain fills in the rest so there’s not much detail. I love it! This remains one of my favorite faces that I’ve drawn. I’m working on more detailed faces now as you can see by the top photo.

The moral of the story is: JUST BEGIN! It’s such a great feeling when you can do things that you never thought you’d be able to do. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Art Journal with Paint, Stamps & Stencils

As Crafters, we often get stuck in our “groove” and use the same products and techniques over and over. I definitely fall prey to that a lot. In the past couple of years, I have tried to make a conscious effort to move out of my comfort zone and explore other mediums. Ink will always be my first love but I am thoroughly enjoying my exploration into PAINT! This is a spread I did using a new Stamp Set and Stencils I won from Ranger Ink in a Dina Wakley Challenge last week! I LOVE winning! LOL! This is my Art Journal Spread that won on Instagram.

Art Journaling is therapeutic – cathartic even! It’s a great way to express your subconscious feelings. I have several journals going at the same time and they’re in all different styles. I was fortunate to take a few Dina Wakley classes at the Papercraft Clubhouse in CT. One of the things I love about Dina is her laid back teaching style. She often says, after making a “mistake,” “Do we care? No we don’t!” I love that! That has really helped me to dive into my journals and try new things.

So…today, I received my goodies from DWM & Ranger Ink and created a “Gratitude” Art Journal Layout with them in mind.

The DWM Art Journal has lots of different surfaces – Watercolor Paper, Kraft Paper, Burlap. I painted two pages with White Gesso and dried it. I swiped some paint onto the pages and then used a Baby Wipe through the Scales Stencil to remove some of it. I added a little Lime Paint through the same stencil.

Next, I applied paint through the Swirling Dashes Stencil in different colors. I used a Graphite Pencil to draw a “girl” and went over the lines with a wet paint brush. I added some paint to her face, eyes and lips.

I stamped two birds from the Scribbly Bird Stamp Set onto Tissue Paper and loosely colored them in with paint. I also stamped flowers onto the Tissue Paper and painted them in as well. The Tissue Paper was attached to a Manila Tag using Glue & Seal. I pulled a ribbon through the tag and attached it to the paper with Score Tape. I stamped the same flowers in Jet Black Archival Ink onto the “blouse” of my girl.

Textured Art Journal Pages for ITAC17

Although I have been remiss in posting, I have not stopped creating! I love sharing with all of you but writing blog posts has gone by the wayside lately. I apologize for that but you can certainly find lots of my art on my Facebook and Instagram Accounts.

Seth Apter introduced me to The International Tournament of Art & Craft 2017. I’ve been a Paper Crafter for 20 years and I discover new artists, techniques, events, classes and online opportunities to view and share art every day! I thought it would be fun to participate. There were so many times I would allow myself to be intimidated by the incredible talent out there but I’ve come to realize that we are all on different points in the evolution of our talents and it isn’t about the finished product as much as the joy in creating so…here ya go!

I began by adding White Gesso to the pages of my Art Journal, then used Tim Holtz’s Lattice Die to cut a few pieces and added them to the page. Next, I added White Texture Paste to the pages with a spatula in short motions to mimic old plaster walls.

I used a Blending Tool to apply Distress Inks in Vintage Photo, Evergreen Bough, Rusty Hinge & Walnut Stain and blended them with a Baby Wipe.

I used various Stencils to add interest to the pages – TH Mini Stencils: Crocodile, Burlap, Numeric, and Typo with Ground Espresso and Jet Black Archival Inks.

As part of the ITAC First Challenge, I incorporated a face; letters; numbers; lace and textures into my project.

I have a box of actual postage stamps that I always think about but never actually use. LOL – I don’t know what I’m saving them for! I layered two of them over some of the specialty papers I’ve had stashed for quite awhile. I absolutely love how they look! There’s something about using authentic ephemera that makes me feel like a “real” artist (Whatever that means!).

I layered Lace over two different colors of Burlap and snuck a little piece of a Cheesecloth-y type paper I used on the other page and added an Idea-ology piece and “Get Lost Somewhere” from 7 Dots Studio over the top.

Patriotic Art Journal Page

I have been spending lots of time taking classes lately and working on Techniques and Art Journal Pages. You will be seeing them once they’re finished but this was a quick one I whipped up to practice my “drips.” They look so cool when other people do them but I find them challenging. LOL Not sure but I think I’m just “drip challenged.” In any case, here ya go!

Patriotic Art Journal Page

I used a long piece of Watercolor Paper and Dina Wakley’s Paints (Love her!). I put some Red Paint on the Watercolor Paper, moved it around with my fingers and then spritzed it with water so it would “drip.” While it was still wet, I played the Star Stencil over it and used a baby wipe to remove some of the paint through the stencil. Then, I heat set it and pulled out my Tim Holtz Star Stencil and applied Blue Paint through the stencil.

Next, I used White Texture Paste through the Star Stencil and applied Embossing Powder on it while it was still wet, let it dry and then heat set it.

Silver Paint was applied through the Star Stencil and heat set.

Various stamps were applied to the page and water colored or embossed.

To finish the page off, I applied some ink through a couple of other Stencils.
